Partnership
BlueRange and Theben – Innovation through Integration
Theben AG, a long-established specialist in time, lighting, and climate control, is taking an important step into the future: Through its strategic partnership with BlueRange, a provider of wireless building automation, the company is expanding its portfolio to include smart solutions. The goal is to provide modern building technologies that are energy-efficient, user-friendly, and flexible – in offices, public buildings, and increasingly also in residential areas.

Smart technology hidden away
Theben has begun integrating BlueRange Mesh technology into two product groups: flush-mounted switch actuators and flush-mounted blind actuators. These concealed components enable the control of various functions – from lighting and blinds to power outlets. “They then communicate wirelessly with each other – without additional data lines and without complex rewiring,” explains Alexander Strobel, Product Manager at Theben.
With wireless integration via BlueRange, the components can be flexibly networked. The mesh technology used ensures a stable network. If one element fails, communication is automatically forwarded via neighboring devices. This resilience is particularly important in larger installations – whether in an office complex or a multi-story residential building.
Simple Integration, Big Impact
The integration of the BlueRange technology was seamless: “We already had the hardware expertise in-house and were able to develop a smart product with BlueRange that actually works,” Strobel continued. The easy access to wireless communication was particularly convincing: “All you need is the 230-volt power supply – everything else happens wirelessly. This makes the system ideal for renovations, retrofits, revitalizations, and new construction.”
System Openness
A major advantage of the BlueRange solution is the openness of the system. Cross-manufacturer compatibility allows the combination of different components within a building. “That’s the great thing about BlueRange: The products speak a common language. It’s not necessary for all components to come from a single manufacturer,” adds Strobel. This interoperability not only ensures flexibility but also future-proofing – an important requirement for any modern building automation system.
Successful Project
The joint solution was first deployed in a large construction project in Berlin. A completely wireless control system for lights and blinds was implemented there. “Since we are technologically convinced of BlueRange and the complete solution is becoming increasingly popular, we will also offer BlueRange mesh products in addition to KNX,” reports Max Essers, Sales Manager at Theben.
Thanks to the intelligent interplay of the technologies, the project was implemented efficiently. The products communicate seamlessly via the BlueRange mesh – controlled by sensors or schedules, and if desired, manually or via mobile devices. System errors can be identified and resolved using the BlueRange software.
More than just energy savings
But the partnership pursues even broader goals: It’s about using energy wisely, increasing comfort, and making life easier for people – whether in the office or at home. Smart technology can make a difference, especially for older people. Concepts like Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) are more in demand today than ever before. Automatic lighting at night, central control of blinds or heating – these technologies offer not only comfort but also security. The possibilities for developing home-supporting systems using presence detectors and wireless actuators are diverse – especially when wireless retrofitting can be done without structural intervention.
Looking to the future: Internationalization The partnership between Theben and BlueRange is designed for the long term. The integration serves as the starting point for a broad and strategic approach. Bluetooth® is internationally established, and everyone uses devices with this connection technology every day – whether smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, or laptops. This makes BlueRange highly attractive for international markets.
At the same time, the regional proximity of the two partners represents a decisive advantage: ‘Made in Germany’ stands not only for quality, but also for close, efficient collaboration on equal terms. Theben contributes decades of hardware know-how, while BlueRange complements it with state-of-the-art software expertise. Without being dependent on international standards, targeted innovations can be driven forward and new solutions can be flexibly developed.
The success story is just beginning – with great potential for future applications. For Theben and BlueRange, this is a joint step into a digitally connected, energy-efficient, and people-centric future.
